Halle Berry Preemptively Files for Divorce
In a Hollywood first, Halle Berry today announced her engagement to Unfaithful actor Olivier Martinez, then preemptively filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Divorce lawyer to the stars Joanna Lutz says, “It’s unorthodox, but certainly not without foundation. I mean, did you see how he treated Kylie Minogue? It’s really just a matter of time.”
The couple met in 2010 a few months after Halle’s break-up with Gabriel Autry and Olivier’s split with everyone on Maxim’s Hot 100.
Berry has one child from a previous relationship. There are no children expected from the union with Martinez as the divorce will take effect immediately following the couple’s planned $10 million wedding on Blue Heaven Island, a private island in French Polynesia which the couple will buy for the week-long nuptial celebration, then sell. The wedding, planned for the summer of 2012, will be attended by Hollywood royalty and will include tribal fan dancers, trained peacocks and French Polynesian fusion cuisine, including descoquilles Saint-Jacques and sautéed sea anemones.
“It’s a shame they’re going to get divorced because their wedding is going to be amazing,” said one expected guest on condition of anonymity.
The couple released a joint statement announcing their engagement, and also asking for privacy during their difficult anticipated divorce.
“We are pleased to confirm that we are, in fact, engaged. We ask for your understanding as we work through the painful process of getting married and then divorced right after.”
Property division may become an issue because the prenup they’re going to hammer out next week is expected to be less than iron-clad, and their joint ownership of Blue Heaven Island for the week of the wedding may raise some sticky legal issues.
Their reps could not be reached for comment.
